Indeed. The dependency on Ubuntu isn’t so deeply grafted that it would be so difficult to switch repositories.

It’s also not easy to imagine a scenario where the distro just gets abandoned, even if Canonical decides to go belly-up overnight. I don’t think such a doomsday scenario would be so catastrophic.

Mint already has a Debian edition. I think you are making it sound a lot harder than it would be to change. Look at Solus and how quickly Ikey had that up and running.

Newbies won’t know why they should choose a Debian based distribution over Ubuntu, so would not read this..I understand that Ubuntu is based on Debian, with their own customised components, and most of the authors listed distro’s depend on Ubuntu and not directly on Debian, such that if Ubuntu disappeared, there will be significant problems in most of these distributions restructuring to use Debian as a base…could take years.

I absolutely agree, and what floored me was not substituting LMDE if they wanted a Mint entry….

Your article title is misleading!

Yet the insistence on Snap packages over native packages pushed me to Mint Mate. I don’t like the Mint themes, but found I was able to install the standard Mate themes from the official repository, so I am now happy with my Mint installation.

I also agree with nama nama. You don’t need the terminal for much anymore. I am a total GUI guy. I am a poor speller and worse typist. I use one command that I copy and paste.
sudo dpkg –configure -a
and I only need that if an upgrade is interrupted somehow, like a crash or freeze, which seldom happens, and for some reason Synaptic cannot fix the problem.
