Here’s my experience in case its helpful to others.
I have a MBP from around 2018 model A1708 that got some water damage. I followed most of the advice here. Eventually my laptop did recover without paid service or any special work. The biggest factor in its recovery was the drying time. After 48 hours of drying, it worked very intermittently. After 4 days, it worked most of the time. Then, after 7 days of drying, it worked reliably. During most of this drying time, the case was open, the battery disconnected, and a room temperature fan was blowing on the exposed electronics.
Where this article says “48 hours is the absolute minimum” of drying time, I’d stress that 4 days or even 8 days is a plausible amount of drying time.
