It does not describe “how to install MacOS on a USB drive”; it describes how to install the MacOS INSTALLER on a USB drive.

I cannot count the number of other articles that make the same mistake.

What if you want to install the MacOS itself on a bootable USB drive so that you can boot and run from it, as I did when I came to this article? An article describing that procedure could aptly be named “how to install MacOS on a USB drive”.

I have been wading through articles with this same incorrect naming for over an hour, now, and would love to find an article showing me how to install various versions of the MacOS – the operating system itself, NOT its installer. If you could point me in the direction of such an article (and leave a link here for others who share my plight), I would be very grateful.

Disk Maker X was a nice alternative, but it’s not compatible with Big Sur: https://diskmakerx.com/.
