One of the worst things a Windows user encounters is the Blue Screen of Death. It seems like a death sentence for your computer, but with a little work, you can bring your computer back. If the BSoD shows that the error is an “Unexpected Store Exception Error,” the following are some tricks to fix the issues causing the dreaded screen.
Update Windows 10 to the latest version
You can resolve most store exception errors by updating the Windows operating system to the newest version. Updating will (hopefully) eliminate many software and driver issues.
To update your Windows OS:
1. Click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
2. Click on the gear icon to open settings.
3. Search for “Check for updates” in the search box.
4. Download any new updates that appear.
Remove temporary files
Sometimes the cure for a store exception error is to delete the temporary files that may be clogging up your computer.
1. Type Disk Cleanup in the search bar.
2. Open Disk Cleanup.
3. Use the drop-down arrow to select the drive you want to clean. This will usually be C:.
4. Click OK.
5. Wait for the list of files to appear.
6. Scroll down to find Temporary files and check the box next to it. You may also want to check Temporary Internet files.
7. Click OK and confirm you want to delete the files.
Disable Fast Startup
Fast startup is enabled by default on your device to start your device more quickly by using a particular hibernation option. Using fast startup can cause the store exception error, so try disabling it to see if that solves the problem.
1. Type Control Panel in the search box.
2. Open Control panel.
3. Open Power Options. You may need to use the search box in the Control Panel to quickly locate it.
4. Click “Change what the power buttons do.”
5. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
6. Untick the box next to “Turn on fast startup.”
7. Click Save changes.
Determine the health of the hard drive
Hardware issues cause some store exception errors. Most commonly, the hard drive will be the culprit.
First, try disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive to make sure it is secure. If that doesn’t fix the error, run the System file checker.
1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
2. In the window that appears, type cmd.
3. Instead of clicking “OK,” press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open the Command prompt in administrator mode.
4. Type sfc /scannow after the arrow.
5. Press Enter.
The process takes a while to complete. When it finishes, you may get a message that the program couldn’t find any integrity violations, meaning the hard disk is not causing the error.
Check BIOS configuration
The BIOS (basic input/output system) is the program a personal computer’s microprocessor uses to start the system. If your hard drive is working correctly, checking the BIOS is the next step to finding the issue causing the store exception error.
To fix issues with the BIOS, you need to access it and change some of the settings. To get into BIOS, check the motherboard’s manual for detailed instructions, since each model may have different steps.
Once you are in BIOS, check to see if the SATA configuration is on AHCI. Also, be sure Windows is the boot device.
If this doesn’t solve the problem, you may need to upgrade or downgrade your BIOS. Altering the BIOS is an advanced procedure, so don’t try it unless you are sure you can do it. Any mistakes could permanently damage your machine.
Update your display drivers
Another option that may solve the store exception error is to update your display drivers. To do this, you should first enter Safe mode.
1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
2. Select “Update & Security.”
3. Choose Recovery.
4. Open “Recovery Settings.”
5. Under Advanced startup, select “Restart now.”
6. After your PC restarts and displays the Choose an option screen, select “Troubleshoot -> Advanced options -> Startup Settings -> Restart.” It may ask you for your BitLocker recovery key, which is found in your Microsoft account online.
7. After your PC restarts, you’ll see a list of options. Select 4 or press F4 to start your PC in Safe Mode. If you’ll need to use the Internet, select 5 or press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
After you have entered Safe mode,
1. Open Device manager by typing devmgr in the search box.
2. In the list of devices that appear, locate “Display adapters” and double-click on it.
3. Right-click the display driver and select “Uninstall device.”
4. Restart your computer.
5. Open Settings (Win + I).
6. Select Update & Security.
7. Click “Check for updates” to install the latest driver.
If you try all of these ideas and still have trouble with the store exception error, you could also temporarily disable your antivirus and see if that works. Don’t forget to enable it again or have a backup program running to keep your computer safe. Hopefully, one of these ideas will solve this problem for you.
