EarFun Free True Wireless Earphones Review

There are no shortage of true wireless earphones on the market, with new ones hitting the shelf almost every day. EarFun Free are yet another set of true wireless earphones but with a low $49.99 price tag and noise cancellation technology. Is this really a good deal or just another cheap low-end set of earbuds? Let’s find out.

EarFun, the company behind this earphones, was begun in 2018. And in those short two years, they have won several design awards for their earphones, the latest being the CES 2020 Innovation award. They have two products: EarFun Free and EarFun Air. This review is for EarFun Free.

Design

Earbuds are such small gadgets, that you can’t deviate much from the mainstream design. The either come with an AirPods-like stem, or they don’t. EarFun Free belongs to the latter. The earbuds don’t come with stems and are shaped like a kidney bean.

I have used both designs and have reservation about the kidney beans-design earbuds, as they tend to go deep into the ear canal and hurt after extended usage. Luckily, this is not the case with EarFun Free. They fit snugly in the ear canal, and the shape of the earbuds is perfectly designed to be hidden in the ear, so only a small portion of them protrude.

On the other hand, the charging case is made of plastic-like material and feels cheap. To be truthful, at $49, they are really cheap, and the charging case makes them appear more so.

There are four LED lights at the front that show the battery level. Behind the charging case is a USB-C port, which can be charged using a USB-C cable. A surprise addition is the wireless charging feature. Simply place the charging case on a wireless charging pad, and it will start charging.

Performance

Pairing of the earphones is quick and easy. Take them out of the charging case, go to the Bluetooth settings of your phone, and select to pair them. The pairing is only required for the first usage.

The Bluetooth connection is stable, and I have never had a dropped connection in my two weeks of continuous usage. I am also able to leave my phone in one room, go to the kitchen with the earphones on, and keep a strong connection.

I was in doubt when I read that it comes with an internal microphone that cancels outside noise. This active noise-cancellation technology is usually only available for big high-end headphones. However, I was surprised to find that noise cancellation works really well on EarFun Free. Being forced to work from home and in a noisy environment, I can immediately feel the difference after putting the earbuds on, and I can’t even hear my wife shouting at me just across the table.

There is no use in a noise-cancellation technology if the sound quality is inherently bad. Luckily, that is not the case with EarFun Free. The sound quality is good, particularly the bass. I always like to test it with Yanni’s symphonic music, and the bass and mid was loud and clear to me. The high is a bit soft, but not one that will distort the sound quality. One thing I like is the immersive feel as a result of the tight fit of the earbuds.

Controlling the music requires you to click on the button on the earbuds. There are buttons on both the left and right earbuds. The usage is pretty standard among most earbuds:

• Press once: Play/pause
• Press twice: Control volume
• Press thrice: Skip/next track
• Press and hold: Activate Siri/Google Assistant

The battery life of the earbuds can last up to six hours, and the case can charge it four times before it need recharging. This should last you for a good 30 hours of continuous playback.

EarFun Free earbuds come with an IPX7 rating. In case you are not aware, it means them can be submerged in water one meter deep for 30 minutes. If you love to swim with your earbuds on, these are the ones to go for.

Verdict

The original price is $79.99, but they are available now at $49.99. Despite the low price point, they pack many great features into them. You get noise cancellation, IPX7 rating, wireless charging and good sound quality. Tell me this is not a good steal.

If you are looking for cheap and good TWS earphones, get EarFun Free. Even if you are not looking for a set, you should also get them as a backup to your current earbuds.
