Our Rating

9 / 10

One of the hottest things to become popular with the pandemic is cleansing products. As people are looking for ways to keep their gadgets free of bacteria and virus, there are more and more sterilizers being released in the market, leaving you with options when choosing one. Collapxi is a collapsible UVC sterilizer that you can bring on the go and is a power bank too. Interesting? Let’s take a look at how it performs.

What You Need to Know about UV Sterilization

UV light has been used for sterilization and disinfection as early as the mid 20th century. However, it is mostly used in industrial/medical sterilization and is not readily available for the household until the last few years. Now you can find plenty of UV sterilizers on the market, in different sizes and capabilities. One thing you should note while using a UV sterilizer is that UV radiation is harmful to the body, particularly the eyes. Exposing your skin to the UV light isn’t wise, and don’t even attempt to look into it.

COLLAPXI Collapsible UVC Sterilizer

Collapxi has an interesting design. Instead of being a handheld UV sterilizer (like what others are doing), it is power bank with UV LED lights beneath. It is attached to a collapsible box where you can place your phone (and any other items) and sterilize it.

The case is about 8 inches in size (slightly larger than your mobile phone) and 1 inch in depth (when collapsed), which makes it small and light enough to put it in your bag and carry around with you.

The case can be opened up into two halves. The top half has a collapsible silicon wall that you can extend when in use.

To use it, open the case, put your phone (or other things that you want to disinfect) in, extend the silicon wall and close the case. There is a button at the top of the powerbank. Press it two times to start the UV sterilization process.

After five minutes, the UV light will automatically go off. You can also remove the top part of the case, press the button twice to turn on the UV light, and use it as a handheld sterilizer.

Handy Power Bank

For a product that is marketed as a sterilizer, I actually find the power bank is more useful than the sterilization function. The power bank has a 10,000mAh capacity and can output 5V/2.4A of power. The best thing is that there is a wireless charging pad on it, so you can just place your phone on the circle patch and charge it wirelessly.

Most power banks require you to use your own charging cable. This particular power bank comes with lightning and USB-C cables attached to it. And if your phone still uses a micro-USB port, it comes with a USB-C to micro-USB adapter, too. There is no need for additional cables. For this, it certainly got full marks for well-thought-out design and user-friendliness.

Wrapping Up

While this is a simple gadget, it is a useful and innovative one. Its portability and well-thought-out design make it a pleasure to use. Regardless of whether it is a power bank or UV sterilizer, you will want to have it in your bag, especially with the pandemic not seeming to end anytime soon.

Collapxi is currently running a Kickstarter fundraising campaign and costs around $95 (Singapore dollars, approximately USD71).
