The command looks like this:

softwareupdate –fetch-full-installer –full-installer-version 10.13.6

Switch out the numbers with the version you want. Since many installers are big, you could be waiting a while. The installer appears in the Applications folder AFTER it is done downloading (I found no sign of it until done).

Any ideas on what I can try next? Have you been able to get El Capitan to run in VirtualBox?

I used http://updates-http.cdn-apple.com/2019/cert/061-41424-20191024-218af9ec-cf50-4516-9011-228c78eda3d2/InstallMacOSX.dmg, and created the installer using https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372.
