My view is that there’s an order of magnitude in the difference between the open PC hardware ecosystem’s complexity for compatibility and the limited hardware configurations of Macs and the drivers that pass validation for that limited subset.

If we’re talking personal experience, then in the 15-odd years I’ve had to deal with Windows updates, I have suffered numerous system-breaking issues that have resulted in the loss of money and productive time. In the last 7 years of working with Macs I have not suffered a single minute of lost productivity due to updates.

Professional users are of course better off deferring updates that aren’t critical security patches regardless of what platform they are on, but this is an article for general audiences and I trust that professional users already have formal policy around update management.

Since Apple is in control of both the hardware and software, you know that every update has been tested on a computer that’s identical to the Mac you’re using.” Seriously? I have worked on many Apple computers, iPhones, and iPads that suffered from Mac OS updates. No testing could cover every device configuration, and to say that all testing done is done on computers identical to my four Macs is just absurd. None of them are identical to each other in any way, shape, or form. And please note how many updates are issued by Apple that are designed to “fix bugs.” That alone should tell you that Apple updates are far from perfect. I always advise my Apple customers to defer updates for at least a few weeks until the dust settles.
